Obama's Kenya ghosts

About 50 parishioners were locked into the Assemblies of God church before it was set ablaze. They were mostly women and children. Those who tried to flee were hacked to death by machete-wielding members of a mob numbering 2,000.

The 2008 New Year Day atrocity in the Kenyan village Eldoret, about 185 miles northwest of Nairobi, had all the markings of the Rwanda genocide of a decade earlier.

By mid-February 2008, more than 1,500 Kenyans were killed. Many were slain by machete-armed attackers. More than 500,000 were displaced by the religious strife. Villages lay in ruin. Many of the atrocities were perpetrated by Muslims against Christians.

The violence was led by supporters of Raila Odinga, the opposition leader who lost the Dec. 27, 2007, presidential election by more than 230,000 votes. Odinga supporters began the genocide hours after the final election results were announced Dec. 30. Mr. Odinga was a member of Parliament representing an area in western Kenya, heavily populated by the Luo tribe, and the birthplace of Barack Obama's father.

Mr. Odinga had the backing of Kenya's Muslim community heading into the election. For months he denied any ties to Muslim leaders, but fell silent when Sheik Abdullahi Abdi, chairman of the National Muslim Leaders Forum, appeared on Kenya television displaying a memorandum of understanding signed on Aug. 29, 2007, by Mr. Odinga and the Muslim leader. Mr. Odinga then denied his denials.

The details of the MOU were shocking. In return for Muslim backing, Mr. Odinga promised to impose a number of measures favored by Muslims if he were elected president. Among these were recognition of "Islam as the only true religion," Islamic leaders would have an "oversight role to monitor activities of ALL other religions [emphasis in original]," installation of Shariah courts in every jurisdiction, a ban on Christian preaching, replacement of the police commissioner who "allowed himself to be used by heathens and Zionists," adoption of a women's dress code, and bans on alcohol and pork.

This was not Mr. Odinga's first brush with notoriety. Like his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the main opposition leader in the 1960s and 1970s, Raila Odinga is a Marxist He graduated from East Germany's Magdeburg University in 1970 on a scholarship provided by the East German government. He named his oldest son after Fidel Castro.

Raila Odinga was implicated in the bloody coup attempt in 1982 against then-President Daniel Arap Moi, a close ally of the United States. Kenya has been one of the most stable democracies in Africa since the 1960s. The ethnic cleansing earlier this year was the worst violence in Kenya since that 1982 coup attempt.

Mr. Odinga spent eight years in prison. At the time, he denied guilt but later detailed he was a coup leader in his 2006 biography. Statue of limitations precluded further prosecution when the biography appeared.

Initially, Mr. Odinga was not the favored opposition candidate to stand in the 2007 election against President Mwai Kibaki, who was seeking his second term. However, he received a tremendous boost when Sen. Barack Obama arrived in Kenya in August 2006 to campaign on his behalf. Mr. Obama denies that supporting Mr. Odinga was the intention of his trip, but his actions and local media reports tell otherwise.

Mr. Odinga and Mr. Obama were nearly inseparable throughout Mr. Obama's six-day stay. The two traveled together throughout Kenya and Mr. Obama spoke on behalf of Mr. Odinga at numerous rallies. In contrast, Mr. Obama had only criticism for Kibaki. He lashed out against the Kenyan government shortly after meeting with the president on Aug. 25. "The [Kenyan] people have to suffer over corruption perpetrated by government officials," Mr. Obama announced.

"Kenyans are now yearning for change," he declared. The intent of Mr. Obama's remarks and actions was transparent to Kenyans - he was firmly behind Mr. Odinga.

Mr. Odinga and Mr. Obama had met several times before the 2006 trip. Reports indicate Mr. Odinga visited Mr. Obama during trips to the U.S. in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Mr. Obama sent his foreign policy adviser Mark Lippert to Kenya in early 2006 to coordinate his summer visit. Mr. Obama's August trip coincided with strategizing by Orange Democratic Movement leaders to defeat Mr. Kibaki in the upcoming elections. Mr. Odinga represented the ODM ticket in the presidential race.

Mr. Odinga and Mr. Obama's father were both from the Luo community, the second-largest tribe in Kenya, but their ties run much deeper. Mr. Odinga told a stunned BBC Radio interviewer the reason why he and Mr. Obama were staying in near daily telephone contact was because they were cousins. In a Jan. 8, 2008, interview, Mr. Odinga said Mr. Obama had called him twice the day before while campaigning in the New Hampshire primary before adding, "Barack Obama's father is my maternal uncle."

President Kibaki requested a meeting of all opposition leaders in early January in an effort to quell the violence. All agreed to attend except Mr. Odinga. A month later, Mr. Kibaki offered Mr. Odinga the role of prime minister, the de facto No. 2 in the Kenyan government, in return for an end to the attacks. Mr. Odinga was sworn in on April 17, 2008.

Mr. Obama's judgment is seriously called into question when he backs an official with troubling ties to Muslim extremists and whose supporters practice ethnic cleansing and genocide. It was Islamic extremists in Kenya who bombed the U.S. Embassy in 1998, killing more than 200 and injuring thousands. None of this has dissuaded Mr. Obama from maintaining disturbing loyalties.

Holy videos! Messiah Obama mocks Bible

On the one hand, Barack Obama is "the Messiah," according to Minister Louis Farrakhan, as seen in this video.

On the other hand, there's a "television commercial showing clips of Sen. Barack Obama mocking the Bible," reports WorldNetDaily.

, "If this ad is seen by all the swing voters in all the key swing states, it would not only anger anyone who reads the Bible, but will make anyone who sees the ad re-think the Jeremiah Wright fiasco as well as Obama's remarks in April that 'small town America' is so bitter that they have to 'cling to their guns and religion.'

The commercial features edited clips from a speech Sen. Obama made before a conference in Washington, D.C., June 28, 2006

"Whatever we once were, we are no longer just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers.

And even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools? Would we go with James Dobson's, or Al Sharpton's? Which passages of Scripture should guide our public policy? Should we go with Leviticus, which suggests slavery is ok and that eating shellfish is abomination? How about Deuteronomy, which suggests stoning your child if he strays from the faith? Or should we just stick to the Sermon on the Mount - a passage that is so radical that it's doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application? So before we get carried away, let's read our Bibles. Folks haven't been reading their Bibles." --- Barack Obama

Ticketmaster Is Evil And Must Die

Posted on October 12, 2008 | 11 Views

Ticketmaster is an evil monopoly that steals cash from defenseless consumers. They are infinitely more evil than their hated 30% surcharge would suggest, and they must be destroyed.

A Modern Monopoly

Did you know you aren't Ticketmaster's primary customer? Sure, you and your friends bought 141 million tickets last year, but Ticketmaster's loyalty belongs to their true customers: venues and promoters. Ticketmaster secures its monopoly by goading them into multi-year agreements that empower Ticketmaster to act as their exclusive vendor. In exchange, Ticketmaster gives them money. Lots and lots of money. Several million dollars upfront, sometimes.

Ticketmaster doesn't earn a cent from a ticket's face value. It all goes straight back to the venue, promoter, and talent. To sweeten the deal, Ticketmaster also shares a slice of its exorbitant fees, giving venues and promoters an incentive to support Ticketmaster's outrageous markups. "It's not us!," they can whimper. "It's that damn TicketBastard!"

Ticketmaster's 9,000+ exclusive agreements makes them the gatekeeper to 90% of the nation's arenas and amphitheaters, 70% of our clubs and small theaters, and most of our basketball, hockey, and football games.

So What Am I Paying For?

* The Service Charge

This is Ticketmaster's cash cow. The majority of their $1.2 billion in revenue comes from this all-encompassing charge. It appears on all tickets, and cannot be escaped.
* The Facility Charge

This is the venue's cash cow. Sure, they also take a slice from the ticket's face value, but they want more, dammit, and they get it here.
* The Processing Charge

Wait a minute... didn't you pay a service charge? What's the difference between processing and service? Right, there is none. Well, technically that's not true. The service charge is refundable and the processing charge is not. Ticketmaster claims that the processing charge covers their expenses for taking your order and finding you seats. Sounds like service to us.
* The Convenience Charge

By far, the most annoying name for a fee. It's the price you pay for printing out the tickets you bought, even after paying a service and processing fee.

Facing tough economy, some turn to eBay

Facing tough economy, some turn to eBay

NEWTOWN -- With the economy in poor shape, residents of one of the wealthiest cities in Connecticut are searching for ways to increase the depth of their wallets.

Some are turning to eBay to help regain the money they've paid at the gas pump.

Kerri Cartelli, a stay-at-home mother of four from Newtown, started selling on eBay in 2003, after she had her third child.

Armed with a new digital camera her husband gave her, she began listing and selling children's clothing online.

Cartelli, who was a public school teacher in the Bronx before becoming a mother, decided to take an eBay certification course to put her teaching skills back in use.

"The greatest thing about eBay for me as a mom was that I didn't have to do it that day," Cartelli told the more than 50-person crowd that showed up for the first of two eBay selling seminars she gave last month at C.H. Booth Library.

One of the most attractive qualities of eBay is that sellers and buyers can post and purchase items 24 hours a day, which allows people to work around their hectic schedules and as frequently or infrequently they choose.

In fact, 1.3 million sellers worldwide use eBay as a primary or secondary source of income, Cartelli said.

The flexibility and convenience of eBay, as well as the ability to make a high profit, are some of the major reasons Cartelli continues to sell on eBay.

She said she posts her items and corresponds with buyers on her laptop
Advertisement
while her children are in bed. She does all her eBay work at night, except taking pictures of items she wants to sell, which she does during the day because her children enjoy watching her do it.

She said the first words from her older children when they get home from school are often about whether she sold anything online that day.

Besides teaching the basics of how to set up a seller account, receive and make payments, list items and ship them, Cartelli used the two-hour seminar to dispel myths and fears people have about selling online.

"If you put it for $1 and someone bids on it, you have to sell it," unless you list a reserve price," Cartelli said. "You need to know what you are willing to let it go for."

People of all ages attended the free seminars sponsored by the library. Three sisters who are home-schooled asked about selling historical dresses and homemade jewelry.

Elderly couples came to learn how to make some money during their retirement years. Working and single mothers showed up to find out how to earn extra money during their free time.

She assured people they will not have their identities stolen. Everyone is asked the same questions when they register, including their checking account information if they sign up for PayPal.

PayPal is a service that allows people to have money taken out of or deposited in their checking accounts, to avoid the hassle of sending money orders or personal checks.

"Don't panic when you put in your checking account (number). There's no one watching ... It's 2008," she said. "It's fun. Enjoy it -- don't panic."

"We go to church and drink the wine. I don't know where that cup's been!" she told the crowd, causing laughter to erupt throughout the room.

One important thing Cartelli emphasized is that eBay and PayPal will never send e-mails. All correspondence is done within the Web site, except PayPal notifying that money has been deposited in a checking account.

So never click on a link and enter personal information, she warned. Always go to eBay.com and sign in to check messages.

Another facet of eBay is the "Buy it now" feature, which allows people to purchase an item for a set cost instead of entering a bidding war with other online shoppers.

"Now people can actually go to sleep, knowing they win," Cartelli said.

To list an item as a "Buy it now," sellers need to have previously bought or sold 10 items, she said.

"Once you do it a few times, you will be like 'Why didn't I do this before?"

Lower Stress Of Holiday Flying With Kids

Posted on October 12, 2008 | 10 Views

Does even the thought of packing up the whole family for a flight have you dreading the holidays, even though they're still a couple of months away?

Family travel doesn't have to be a nightmare and, on The Saturday Early Show, Laura Begley, deputy editor of Travel + Leisure magazine, shared some ideas for lightening the stress load when flying with the kids ar holiday time.

Begley says it's not too late to get a good deal on holiday flights. Bookings have been down due to the poor economy, so there are more open seats available then usual. To find a good deal, try SmarterTravel.com. It has lots of good prices and great package deals.

Six Commandments for Flying with Kids:

# Book early morning flights

# Travel on Saturday

# Fly non-stop

# Check airline baggage policy (on set carry-on diaper bag)

# Keep the kids entertained (on set products, coloring books, kid camera, portable DVD player)

# Hang on to your stroller (stroller with detachable car seat)

Travel + Leisure Show-and-Tell Items for Family Air Travel

# SkipHop Duo Diaper Bag $54 www.skiphop.com

# Toshiba Portable DVD Player - SPD71S $129.99 www.toshiba.com

# Fisher-Price Kid Tough Digital Camera $50 www.fisher-price.com

# Range of activity books/crayons

# Maclaren Easy Traveler $75 www.maclarenbaby.com

Book early morning flights: Basically, early morning flights are the least likely to be delayed. And when you're traveling with kids, you don't want them to be tired or cranky. Because cranky kids = stressed-out moms and dads.

Travel on Saturdays: According to our research, Saturday is a much quieter day at the airport. Most people leave for weekend trips on Friday, and there are no business travelers on a Saturday, so the airport is relatively empty and easy to navigate.

Fly non-stop: For families, the most stressful time is getting on and off the plane. If you fly non-stop, you have fewer headaches to deal with. You also have to deal with all the stuff, bags, carriages, toys, kids going to the bathroom, etc - it's just easier to do it once. I think it's worth the extra money. First, you'll get there faster, have less hassle and, most importantly, the possibility of delays is lessened. And long delays and kids are a terrible mix. Also, a lot of airlines are eliminating (United, for instance) pre-boarding for families - so boarding with the kids will be that much harder.

Check airline baggage policy: You really want to do this. A lot of people don't realize that many carriers don't count the stroller as a checked item, so you won't be charged if you bring it along. But you must check with the airlines. Also, it's good to note - if you have a kid with a ticket, your child can bring one carry-on item, a personal item, and have a checked bag. So, even your one month-old can actually carry-on an adult-sized suitcase! Continue>>>

Overscheduling Kids

Skating on Monday. Mom and Tot class on Wednesday. School on the other days, work and household chores in between... Oh but what about swimming lessons? Gymnastics? Language classes? Sometimes I feel like I'm fighting the clock, trying to squeeze in every imaginable activity to enhance the lives of my little guys. I also feel the pressure when I speak to other moms who have their kids signed up for three extra-curricular activities a week.

What ever happened to just sitting around and playing house with the kids? Running around the backyard playing tag?

Are we overscheduling our kids? I wonder if they feel the same stress that we do.

Unstructured playtime might be just as important for your child's development as academics and sports, according to a 2006 study from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Unstructured meaning no schedule. Letting them just be kids. Keeping the toys simple, like empty boxes and containers, to encourage imaginative play. Playing at the park. Riding their bikes. Setting up a tent in the backyard and play camping.

Let your child lead and set the pace for play. When an adult isn't dictating how something must be done, kids practice when to push and when to compromise on their own. They also have room to use their imagination.

I've dropped swimming lessons this fall because I figured I'm overscheduling my kids and we all need some down time. I've thrown structure out the window at home and have let the kids decide what they want to do for fun. For them, this simply means they want to engage in a wrestling match, play a game of hide and seek or tickle each other to the point of tears of laughter.

Now, a new study shows that kids are not the overscheduled generation that many believe them to be. The study's researcher found that a higher level of activity was not linked to such stress symptoms as depression, anxiety, alienation and fearfulness. The parents may feel overloaded but the children who are more active are not more stressed.

Hmmm...so what do I do now? Sign my kids up for more activities again? What is best for my them? I think a balance is crucial here. But how does one attain it?

One option is to slow down and set some limits. Allow your kids (or if they are too young, you decide for them) to choose one activity per season. Fall is a beautiful time for horse-back riding while summer is great for outdoor swimming lessons. Skating in winter is skating and spring is great for soccer.

Another option is to do two concurrent activities that are seasonal, ie. swimming and soccer in the spring and summer, and skating/hockey and music/dance classes in the fall and winter.

When? Schedule all the activities during the week so that your family can have the weekends free. Or if your weekdays are busy enough, set aside your Saturday and get it all done in one crazy day.

Some moms take the very laid-back approach and don't stress an ounce about enrolling their children into programs from the time they are out of the womb. Then there are those moms who sign up for every mom and tot program available. Are baby dance classes really necessary? They must be geared towards moms who need to socialize because really, your 1-year-old has years before appearing on "Dancing with the Stars".

With the Boss, I stressed about getting him into various activities from a very young age because "kids need to learn social skills". My opinion is that kids have the rest of their lives to become social butterflies! With the Underboss, although I've only recently enrolled him in a class at 20 months old, he is thriving unbelievably.

For me, I figure let kids be kids - let them have fun! I'll enroll my own children in one program a season. Once they start school full-time, their lives will quickly start to resemble an adult's with deadlines and schedules. Soon enough each of them will be carrying their own BlackBerry. Source>>>

parents think they're cool when they send text messages to their children

This may signal the death of texting, but half of parents think they're cool when they send text messages to their children and most think it's the best way to check on their kids, Ars Technica: The Art of Technology reports.

"They found that 76 percent of parents feel that their children are more likely to keep them abreast of their activities through text messaging than other methods. 73 percent said that their kids were more likely to respond to a text message than other methods of communication, and a full half of parents feel that texting with their kids makes them "cool." -- Ars Technica post on an ATT survey.

Wall Street's Pain Felt Down On Music Street

The huge sell off on Wall Street and all of the world's financial markets over the last two weeks hasn't just been felt on Main Street. Sunset Boulevard, Music Row and beyond have felt the sting of the stunning declines as well. Music companies and those for whom music is just part of a larger portfolio have all suffered major losses in value. Based in closing prices on Thursday October 10th, 2008:

* Wallstreet WMG - $5.95 off a 52 week high of $11.50
* Sony - $23.51 off a 52 week high of $57.19
* Apple- $88.74 off a 52 week high of $202.96
* Sirius XM - $.40 off a 52 week high of $3.94 *
* Viacom - $20.68 off a 52 week high of $44.95
* Live Nation - $11.74 off a 52 week high of $24.03
* RealNetworks - $3.63 off a 52 week high of $7.61

* NASDAQ normally de-lists sub $1 stocks, but the exchange is considering an exception based in current market conditions.

The market declines are also leaving venture capital firms with less cash and skiddish of investments. Liscencing issues and lawsuit have made some music start-ups a partiurlarly tough sell for months, but the current squeeze is making all venture funding 30% or more tougher to secure according to some estimates.

Later, I decided that writing about rock bands was a lot more satisfying than pining after them. But I've always wondered if I shouldn't have been so quick to give up on those lessons. What if I had kept with it? Could I have been the next Joan Jett? Crooning "I Love Rock N' Roll" at karaoke bars is one thing, but groping a glossy Gibson or Fender and making it explode with beauteous bombast? That's something else entirely.

Pushing multicolored buttons on a fake plastic guitar while virtual fans cheer isn't exactly the kind of high I have in mind, but it is the idea behind Guitar Hero, a video game that's become a phenomenon these past few years, transcending the gamer geek contingent and sucking in real rock fans, not to mention turning a new generation into rock fans, too. Maybe more significantly, it's given the flagging record industry a nice kick in the amps, and not just for dinosaur rockers, either.

When the game's new version, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, featured the song "Through the Fire and Flames" by the band DragonForce, its label, Roadrunner Records, reported a 183 percent sales increase for the single and another spike for its aggro metalers Killswitch Engage, who also have a featured cut. Early SoundScan numbers for all Guitar Hero III's singles -- from Weezer's "My Name Is Jonas" to the Strokes' "Reptilia" -- show download increases across the board.

My first Guitar Hero fix came late, at an after-party for a Sex Pistols show (which the game sponsored). I did a surprisingly good job on the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black," and like Keef, Slash, Jonesy and an ex who shall remain nameless, I think I now finally understand the rhythmic bliss of shredding. From its vibrant visuals to the music selections themselves, however cheesy it sounds (and looks), Guitar Hero is a love letter to rock and roll, and it just might be saving it.

DALE EARNHARDT JR., NO. 88 AMP ENERGY / NATIONAL GUARD IMPALA SS met with media and discussed the yellow line rule, the economy, tomorrow's race and more.

COULD YOU PICK A FAVORITE IN THE CARL EDWARDS / KEVIN HARVICK FRACAS? "No, that would be tough. Kevin would never back down from anybody and you know that Carl is pretty tough, a pretty strong dude."

COULD KEVIN HARVICK BE PLAYING MIND GAMES WITH CARL EDWARDS? "I don't know, really. I just think that there is just a disagreement there. It's probably nothing more than that. It's just a big disagreement between two guys."

IS ANYONE GOOD AT PLAYING MIND GAMES OUT HERE? "Not really."

WHERE DO YOU STAND WITH YOUR NATIONWIDE PROGRAM NEXT YEAR? "We've got it just about entirely finished as far as putting together a program for all the races for each car. We still have a couple of gaps to fill. We started working pretty early and we've had a lot of interest. We've been really more fortunate than most, I'm sure. I feel very confident that we'll be able to get it wrapped up."

IS IT HELPING YOU BY NOT HAVING TO DEAL WITH THE COT NEXT SEASON?

Petty's 1967 Plymouth presented to Hall of Fame

MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- NASCAR Hall of Fame executive director Winston Kelley announced Friday that the Petty Blue 1967 Plymouth Belvedere from Petty Enterprises is "the first significant artifact" publicly presented by the hall. Richard Petty drove the Plymouth to more wins than any other car in NASCAR history.

During the 1967 season, Petty won 27 races, including a NASCAR-record 10 in a row. The car, however, was actually a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere that was updated through 1967. In all, the car tallied 36 wins from 1966-67. It will be on loan for two years from the Richard Petty Museum in Randleman, N.C.
"
Given Richard and Petty Enterprises' success on the track, coupled with Richard being the most recognizable and accessible ambassador for NASCAR for over 50 years, we felt it only appropriate that the first artifact we formally announce be something from Richard and Petty Enterprises.
"
-- WINSTON KELLEY

"The Plymouth Belvedere was a special car," Petty said. "Back then we usually found a car that was good on short tracks or speedways or dirt tracks, but not many that were good everywhere. That Plymouth was fast no matter where we ran. It belongs in the NASCAR Hall of Fame and I have to thank Winston and everyone at the hall for giving us the honor of providing one of the first pieces to go in."

Petty Enterprises was established in 1949, one year after the formation of NASCAR. And now -- 268 wins, 10 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships and 10 Daytona 500 trophies later -- Petty Enterprises is the winningest organization in the history of American motorsports. It seems only natural that the legendary team would have a prominent place in the NASCAR Hall of Fame when the doors open in spring 2010 in Charlotte, N.C.

"When you talk about Richard Petty or Petty Enterprises, you're basically talking about the history of NASCAR," Petty said. "We were there for the very first race and we're still here. It's great to see that our sport has enjoyed enough longevity that we can build a hall of fame. I know it will be a first-class facility that will help educate our new fans to the people that helped build the sport to what we have today."

Kelley acknowledged that picking a Petty artifact as the first significant piece was one of the easiest choices he has made as executive director.

"Given Richard and Petty Enterprises' success on the track, coupled with Richard being the most recognizable and accessible ambassador for NASCAR for over 50 years, we felt it only appropriate that the first artifact we formally announce be something from Richard and Petty Enterprises," Kelley said. "And, to have it be the car that has won more races than any car in NASCAR history is very special.

"Richard, the folks at Petty Enterprises and the entire NASCAR community have been incredibly supportive of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in so many ways throughout the development stages since it was awarded to Charlotte in 2006. We cannot thank everyone enough and look forward to showcasing their success when we open in the spring of 2010," Kelley added. Source>>>

Yellow-line rule would have wiped out greatest finish in NASCAR history

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Suppose for a moment that in 1976 NASCAR had a yellow-line rule like the one that took a victory from rookie Regan Smith on Sunday and gave it to Tony Stewart at Talladega Superspeedway.

Suppose the governing body didn't allow cars to pass below the yellow line back then.

Period, as officials like to say now.

The greatest finish in NASCAR history never would have happened.

Let's refresh. David Pearson passed Richard Petty coming off the final turn of the Daytona 500, but before he could completely clear the seven-time champion, Petty clipped his rear end and both went spinning into the infield.

Petty slid the farthest, coming to a stop in the grass only 25 yards from the finish line. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't restart his famous blue No. 43 until after Pearson limped through the grass and passed him below where the yellow line is today to take the checkered flag.

Fortunately, nobody screamed foul.

"Neither one of us would have [won] because we both went below the yellow line," Petty said Friday as he made the 1967 Plymouth in which he won a record 36 races the first exhibit donation to the NASCAR Hall of Fame that will open in 2010.

David Pearson limps across the finish line to win the 1976 Daytona 500 as Richard Petty can only watch. The two drivers tangled heading for the finish line.

"We were on pit road, man. At that time they said, 'You can win the race on pit road if you are the first one to that start-finish line. We don't care if you're in the infield, on pit road -- if you get there first, you don't have to be on the racetrack.'"

OK, so maybe NASCAR would have allowed that win because the wreck started above the yellow line. Maybe NASCAR would have said Petty forced Pearson below the line.

Whatever, the sport's all-time wins leader (200) believes it should be the same way today.

"Once they throw that white flag, man, all hell should break loose," he said. "They should just say, 'OK, whatever it takes. If you've got to knock the guy out of the deal, if you've got to [go] through the infield to get him, whatever.' That's what it's all about, man."

He's right. If NASCAR wants to bring back the traditional fan, as chairman Brian France said was the mission at the start of this season, then it should bring back some of the traditional rules -- or lack thereof -- that made the sport great.

That doesn't mean the governing body should throw caution out the window and put drivers' lives in danger. But it does mean an outcome shouldn't be decided because it is the judgment of officials that a driver was or was not forced below a line.

"If I was running the show I would have said, 'Last lap, anything goes. If you have to go through the infield, go for it,'" Petty said. "Again, I'm not making the rules."

For those who liked racing the way it was, the Hall will afford them the opportunity to relive those moments. Bobby Allison, Donnie Allison, Ned Jarrett and several other all-time greats were on hand with Petty for Friday's ceremony.

Once they throw that white flag, man, all hell should break loose. They should just say, 'OK, whatever it takes. If you've got to knock the guy out of the deal, if you've got to [go] through the infield to get him, whatever.' That's what it's all about, man.

-- Richard Petty

They relived many of the good ol' days that will be featured through interactive exhibits and videos. Bobby Allison talked about the 1979 Daytona 500 finish that ended with Petty in Victory Lane and him exchanging fisticuffs with Cale Yarborough in the infield grass like it was yesterday.

"I'm afraid I questioned his ancestry," Allison said of Yarborough, who accused Bobby of starting a wreck that ended his chances of winning when it actually was brother Donnie. "And Cale went to beating on my fist with his nose.

"That's my story and I'm sticking with it."

Allison and Pearson laughed about the amount of attention the physical exchange between Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvick received Thursday at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

"This used to happen every week," Petty said. "Ten, 15, 20 years ago nobody paid any attention to it. Now, NASCAR has tried to clean up stuff so much this is a big deal. Fifteen years ago they could have got in a fight and nobody would have paid no attention to it.

"They could have rolled around in the infield and just another day. Times have changed. Everybody looks at things different."

Bobby Allison says confrontations are a part of what humanized the sport and made it so popular.

"I'm proud of both of them," he said of Harvick and Edwards for not hiding their emotions. "If you've got something you want to say, don't walk around and let it boil and boil. Go ahead and say it.

"The only thing I strongly suggest is both of them, Harvick and Edwards, listen to what the other guy says. They may not like it more or less. At least if I'm going to put my 2 cents out there the other guy is entitled to his 2 cents' worth, too."

Maybe one day Harvick and Edwards will be as friendly to each other as Petty and Allison, at one time two of the fiercest rivals in the sport, were Friday. Maybe one day NASCAR will allow passing below the yellow line again and great finishes won't be so controversial.

Thank goodness they allowed it in 1976.

"NASCAR," Bobby Allison said, "can do a lot of things different than they are doing now."
