Ben Harper and his new band, Relentless7, will hit the road next month for a run of club shows to familiarize fans with material from the group's planned debut album.

The quartet--which consists of Harper backed by guitarist Jason Mozersky, along with drummer Jordan Richardson and bassist Jesse Ingalls from L.A. band Oliver Future--kicks off the brief outing Dec. 3 in Solana Beach, CA, with four additional California shows to follow. Dates are below.

The group, which made its live debut during an Oct. 29 Beastie Boys-led "get out the vote" appearance in Youngstown, OH, is currently recording its debut for Virgin, "White Lies for Dark Times," according to Billboard.com, with the set due in stores next May.

Streaming samples of a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Good Times, Bad Times" and the original "Serve Your Soul" can be heard at the fledgling band's website.

A spokesperson said that Harper has no intention of ending his longtime band, Innocent Criminals, and "simply wanted to try something different," according to Billboard.

Harper's most recent album, 2007's "Lifeline," has sold 173,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Bryan Adams books solo-acoustic shows for 2009

Bryan Adams, who last month rolled out plans for a late-year, solo-acoustic tour of the West Coast, has now extended the run into early 2009.

The new dates will see Adams hit the road in early January to tackle roughly a dozen shows scattered throughout the South. Those engagements will follow the veteran Canadian rocker's nine-date run through the West, which gets underway at the end of this month. Details are included below.

The outing is part of Adams' support for his latest album, "11," an acoustic-based collection that surfaced in May and shot to No. 1 in Canada. The set--so titled because it is Adams' 11th album of original music and features 11 songs--was recorded in hotel rooms and backstage areas of concert venues across Europe over the past two years. A deluxe edition of the set featuring bonus tracks and an exclusive performance DVD has been landing in stores outside of the US this month. No plans for a US release have been announced.

Adams has been playing solo-acoustic shows across the US since spring to showcase material from "11" and put a new spin on some of his classics.

"I think for a lot of people that haven't heard me do [an acoustic show] before, it will be intriguing because to play a song like 'Cuts Like a Knife' on acoustic guitar is quite a different thing than hearing it with a full band," Adams explained during a press teleconference earlier this year. "I believe that that will give some insight into the songwriting and it shows that some of the new songs blend in. It's like one solid body of work."

Adams' previous studio album, "Room Service," was released in the US in 2005 and marked his first set of new music in almost seven years, with the exception of the 2002 Grammy-winning film soundtrack for "Spirit," which the singer/songwriter composed and performed in English and French.

Earlier this month, Adams performed at a charity auction in England. Dubbed The Prince's Trust Invest in Futures Gala Dinner and Charity Auction, the event raised about $1.5 million for The Prince's Trust, an organization that helps young people find work.

Alt-rockers O.A.R. (Of a Revolution) are staying busy as 2008 draws to a close, with a fresh slate of radio shows and a new leg of the band's headlining trek set for early next year.

The group is currently finishing up a fall stretch on college campuses behind its most recent album, "All Sides," with the tour continuing tonight (11/14) in Newark, DE. Following the November shows, the group will launch a series of December appearances at radio-sponsored holiday concerts, followed by the next leg of dates behind "All Sides," kicking off Jan. 15 in Spokane, WA. Details are listed below.

"All Sides," which hit stores July 15 and follows 2005's "Stories of a Stranger, is the sixth studio album for O.A.R., which continues to nurture its label as a "college band" with a reputation for peppering its tour schedules with universities.

"Where better to express yourself?" lead singer Marc Roberge asked LiveDaily earlier this year. "Where better to speak your mind and say what the hell you want to say on stage than on a college campus? I think that's what the whole point of a university is--to be able to find yourself and speak your mind, be who you are and find out who you are.

"We're still finding out who we are--but we just get to do it around people in the university system, which is nice," he added.

Moe. maps first dates of the new year

Indie-jam rockers moe. will kick off 2009 with a short series of two-night stands in the US.

The winter tour starts Jan. 30 in Denver and visits New York City and Chicago in February. Pre-sale tickets are currently available and the general on-sale begins tomorrow (11/15) through Ticketmaster (LiveDaily's parent company). The itinerary is listed below.

Moe. [ tickets ] continues to support its eighth studio album, "Sticks and Stones," which surfaced last January on the band's own Fatboy Records label and reached No. 16 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart. The release marks a departure from moe.'s previous efforts, as the majority of the album was written in the studio. The group's usual recording process starts after songs have been performed live for at least a year.

"We wrote and recorded the bulk of the album in about three weeks," guitarist Al Schnier said in a statement. "The songwriting was largely collaborative, whereas in the past, it had been much more singular."

Guitarist Chuck Garvey added that pulling the songs out of thin air and working on the arrangements in-studio fueled the excitement.

"This album is very raw and not over thought," he said. "It's made up of our first instincts--which is not what you get when you play songs for a year or two and then record them."

Over the summer, moe. also released "Dr. Stan's Prescription," the latest set in its live archival series. Volume one of the Dr. Stan series captures a live show from moe.'s 2004 Caribbean cruise, with filler from a 1995 Vail, CO, performance.

The recent releases follow last year's "The Conch," which won the Jammy Award for Best Studio Album.

Resurgent dollar a challenge for concert biz

Amid the current financial crisis, at least one thing is going up in value: the U.S. dollar.

For American artists on the road overseas, the dollar's sudden strength against the euro, the British pound and the Canadian and Australian dollars means that local costs like food and lodging are cheaper. But depending on how they structured their deals with promoters, artists could wind up taking home less than they would have months ago.

They can protect themselves from the dollar's surge to some extent by negotiating tour guarantees in dollars rather than in local currency. But they'll still lose money to currency fluctuations if their percentage of tour profits is calculated in local currency, as is common.

For promoters, currency fluctuations inject an additional level of uncertainty to an already risky game. Bill Zysblat, partner at RZO Productions and co-producer of the worldwide Police reunion tour, warns that "anyone who put tickets on sale in Europe and the U.K. a couple of months ago, and then budgeted their tours accordingly, is in for conversion shock."

On June 1, Zysblat notes, 100 euros was worth about $155. As of Friday, it came to about $127. Similarly, 100 pounds was worth $198 on June 1 and $148 on Friday.

Concert promoters can raise ticket prices to balance out potential losses, but "that's a very dangerous game to play," Hallett says. "We're in an economic downturn and if we push ticket prices too far, we're going to find ourselves losing out."

Currency fluctuation had a significant impact on recent Celine Dion concerts in Canada promoted by AEG Live, according to company CEO Randy Phillips.

"There was easily a 20% swing in the settlements for each show," he said. "I had a similar issue with Tom Petty, where I ended up compromising with Tom's business reps and manager. We split the difference."

Live Nation Canada president of touring and business development Shane Bourbonnais says the unstable Canadian dollar could affect who he books for next summer's Live Nation-produced Pemberton Festival in British Columbia.

"I'm starting to talk to agents now about Pemberton and thinking about what the dollar is going to look like next July," he says.

On June 1, the greenback and the Canadian dollar were near parity; now, one U.S. dollar buys about $1.22 Canadian dollars.

The strong dollar is also complicating touring in Latin America, where major touring acts are paid in dollars. Many local promoters, facing bigger payouts to the acts, are turning to corporate sponsors to help cover costs, but the global economic downturn means that those companies are likely to be suffering as well.

Jorge Naranjo, founder/president of Global Management and Booking Agency in Miami, says he is trying not to focus too much on short-term volatility. "I don't want to strangle the promoters," Naranjo says. "I have to negotiate the best deal for my artist, but I'm also working with entities who see this as a long-term alliance and aren't simply going to take the money and run."

In Australia, where most U.S. acts are paid in American dollars, the Aussie dollar has hit multi-year lows in recent months. This has prompted acts including Paul McCartney, Neil Diamond and Green Day to delay tours until the second half of 2009, sources say. Andrew McManus Presents managing director Andrew McManus says he's advised some of his touring acts that signed deals earlier in the year to renegotiate terms or cancel.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band fans can now consult a user-friendly compatibility chart

Guitar Hero and Rock Band fans can now consult a user-friendly compatibility chart developed by Guitar Hero officials, which lists Rock Band controllers and instruments and whether they are compatible with Activision's Guitar Hero devices. The chart stresses that continued compatibility with non-Guitar Hero controllers is not guaranteed.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band users may have been dealing with their own mangled music mess when trying to figure out which controllers are compatible with which instruments.

Guitar Hero officials want their users to stop worrying about compatibility and focus on unleashing their inner rock star, so they have released a compatibility chart.

"The Guitar Hero team has noticed that there has been a great deal of conversation regarding the entire family of Guitar Hero instruments, and their compatibility across various titles," said an official post on the Guitar Hero Community Web site. "To answer your call, they have put together a user-friendly compatibility chart to make your Guitar Hero experience even more enjoyable."

Download Available

Users can to the Guitar Hero Community Web site and download a JPEG of the chart, which lists MTV Rock Band controllers and instruments, and whether they are compatible with Activision's Guitar Hero devices. The two charts outline each release for both series and their instruments, along with which systems and competing games they work with. Game systems listed include Wii, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

The compatibility chart also includes a disclaimer that certain game functionality may not be available with all controllers, and continued compatibility with any non-Guitar Hero controller is not guaranteed. Activision also makes it clear that its customer service is available only to answer questions about and support Relevant Products/Services for Guitar Hero controllers.

This is not the first time issues of compatibility between MTV and Activision music games have surfaced.

When Wii came out with its Rock Band release, many questioned whether it would be compatible with Guitar Hero III's guitar. It was clear where Harmonix and MTV stood on the issue. Harmonix Music and MTV Games said they believe in an open standard for hardware and game compatibility.

They also said there should be interoperability between music-instrument controllers across all music games, because it would be in the best interest of consumers, game developers and console manufacturers, and would help grow the music-game genre and inspire innovation.

Sony Relevant Products/Services and Harmonix

In August, Sony announced it was working on issues of compatibility. "For the past several months, we have been working closely with Neversoft, Activision, Harmonix and Konami to ensure that PlayStation 3 guitars and drum sets will all feature a basic level of game-play compatibility," said Michael Shorrock of Sony Computer Entertainment.

"We're still working hard to ensure compatibility between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles currently on the market, and we hope to have an announcement on that shortly," Shorrock added. "Of course, each of these great games has their own specific, cool features that may not be compatible with the other controllers, but this is our first big

Harmonix has a long-standing open-compatibility stance for all its games, according to Tracie Snitker, a Harmonix spokesperson. She added that "games will be compatible with third-party controllers that conform to the various platform controller standards."

An elder Cherokee Native American was teaching his grandchildren about life. He said to them, "A fight is going on inside me...It is a terrible fight, and it is between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, pride and superiority. The other wolf stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. This same fight is going on inside of you and every other person too."

They thought about it for a minute and then one child asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?" The old Cherokee simply replied..."The one I feed." -- Anonymous
