Ugly politics: Investigators paint landscape of corruption

Gambling trips to Las Vegas. Calls to judges for favors. A political party built on county workers putting aside their day jobs to handle party business.

The picture federal investigators appear to be trying to paint of county government in Northeast Ohio emerges from batches of federal subpoenas.

Agents want to know whether Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora and Auditor Frank Russo gained control of a cash machine that made them personally rich and helped boost the local Democratic Party.

The unstated subtext of the subpoenas is clear: How did public officials earning less than a successful plumber afford the high life, complete with gambling trips, $100 dinners at expensive steakhouses, jewelry, elaborate swimming pools and $900,000 vacation homes?

Federal investigators are probing, documents show, whether Dimora, Russo and county employee J. Kevin Kelley received gifts and favors in exchange for public contracts going to contrac- tors.

They're also investigating whether Dimora and Russo used the local Democratic Party and the County Administration Building as their personal hiring hall to surround themselves with loyalists grateful to have a job with a solid salary, good benefits and a reliable retirement plan.

Lawyers for Dimora and Russo have adamantly denied their clients have done anything wrong, and say the men are loyal public servants.

The machine that the feds apparently believe is operating in Northeast Ohio works on a simple, self-perpetuating mechanism:

In an economy where no job or pension is safe, elected officials surround themselves with county workers so grateful for the salaries that they are willing to do political work on the public dime, ensuring the party's slate of candidates continues to get elected.

Such an apparatus would keep party leaders in positions to continue influencing which companies get contracts in a town where almost every big development is subsidized by a government entity. continue>>>

MMA is one of the sexiest sports on the market. In an unscientific survey of young adults (17-20) they stated that MMA is sexy. Young ladies love the men in shorts and really loved the tight fighting MMA shorts. Guys as you know loved the ring card girls and felt that overall there was something sexy about female fighters.

Young adults who watched MMA events on television thought that the commercials associated with MMA were some of the sexiest sports advertisements on television. Sex sells and this fact will help put dollars into MMA. The action and excitement of the event according to those surveyed added sexiness to the events. Overwhelmingly those surveyed stated that attending MMA events or watching on television were great date night events. source>>>

WWE remove article taking shots at UFC “crap shoot”

WWE has removed a congratulatory note posted on WWE.com late on Sunday regarding Brock Lesnar's UFC Heavyweight Championship win.

As well as congratulating Lesnar, WWE had also posted the following:

"Critics have noted that many of the fights on the UFC pay-per-view ended in the first round, leaving UFC producers scrambling to fill the three-hour event with content. The dearth of hearty competition left many viewers to watch less prestigious under-card fights and only served to bolster claims that UFC pay-per-view events can often be a "crap shoot" in regards to filling the full three hours."

The article, which in my opinion should never have ever been posted in the first place, has now been removed by WWE.

Whether that is due to the negative coverage the comments have received is unknown.

Perhaps somebody reminded the powers that be of the disaster that was WWE's ECW brand December to Dismember PPV in 2006, which ran shorter than usual WWE PPVs and was deemed an utter failure by all. source>>>

Slumdog Millionaire's music isn't about India'

The Maharaja of modern Indian music, A R Rahman, has talent and vision the stuff of legend, a unanimously recognized musical genius that comes around once-a-generation.

So it was only a matter of time before Hollywood scooped him up and sampled his skills; and that's exactly what happened, first in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, the musical Bombay Dreams and now in Danny Boyle's mega-hyped, Mumbai-based Slumdog Millionaire.

As evidence of his rising celebrity, and to give you insight into the creative process behind the beats of Boyle's masterpiece, we point you to this interview from the prestigious pages of New York Magazine -- a lifestyle mag known especially for its fashion/celebrity/arts/gossip coverage, which always seems to be on the cutting edge of what's in, what's cool and what's happening.

So, given the elite-ness of the publication, this brief QnA session undoubtedly portends great things for Rahman's Hollywood future. And it appears a more comprehensive future is indeed likely.

In the interview, an effusive Rahman has nothing but kind words for director, calling him not only a fast worker and humorous, but also a 'good human being.'

Explaining the differences between working for Hollywood and Bollywood, Rahman says, 'There's not many cues in the film. Usually a big film has 130 cues. This had just seventeen or eighteen: the end credits, beginning credits, that stuff.'

He went on to say that, 'It took two months of planning, two weeks of completing. Usually it takes six months with the musical films I'm doing in India.'

But does the film's music, which is earning near-universal praise from critics, paint an accurate aural portrait of Mumbai? Rahman believes that, 'The soundtrack isn't about India or Indian culture. The story could happen anywhere: China, Brazil [Images], anywhere. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is on in every damn country.'

Yes, really and truly, it appears that the West has woken up to India. We have a feeling Hollywood isn't quite finished with the uber-talented Rahman. So stay tuned! source>>>

The Two Sides of a Carrie Underwood Concert

Artists get good reviews and bad reviews. But rarely do they get both from one show. Carrie Underwood's Saturday night (Nov. 15) show in California must be the exception. Because the critic at the San Francisco Chronicle said Underwood "flaunted that wholesome, harmless, megawatt telegenic appeal." And that she "worked the room with cheerleader confidence and tireless bonhomie" and pulled off an excellent cover of an old Fleetwood Mac song. A writer for the Oakland Tribune tells a different story, claiming, "The 100-minute concert felt too long and didn't contain nearly enough songs that truly connected with the near-capacity crowd." If you were at the show, please let us know which critic got it right source>>>

Obama To Embrace School Choice For His Kids

Posted on November 17, 2008 | 6 Views

Barack Obama's campaign was premised on the notion change will happen. But as the president-elect prepares to move into his new home at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., there is one presidential practice that seems to be standing to survive his tidal wave of change - sending his kids to private school.

Mr. Obama and his wife, Michelle, are not the only Obamas coming to town this January, as Sasha, 7, and Malia, 10, will return the age of innocence to the White House. Sasha will be the youngest child in the White House since the Kennedys resided there in the early 1960s.

But the arrival of the Obama youngsters raises questions about Mr. Obama's faith in the public school system he championed for two years on the campaign trail.

Mr. Obama's plan to revitalize the education system does not mention vouchers in any form and a decision to send his kids to private school, while denying working-class families the same right, could ruffle a few feathers early on in the Obama administration.

The Obama camp's opposition to vouchers was so fierce that when the New York Sun reported last February that the Democrat favored school vouchers, his campaign pounced seeking to discredit the story.

During a meeting with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Mr. Obama, when quested about vouchers, responded, "I will not allow my predispositions to stand in the way of making sure that our kids can learn," adding, "We're losing several generations of kids, and something has to be done."

The Obama camp responded fast and furiously.

"Sen. Obama has always been a critic of vouchers," a campaign statement read. "Throughout his career, he has voted against voucher proposals and voiced concern for siphoning off resources from our public schools."

But while the Democrat is offering to flood U.S. public schools with more resources, he appears unwilling to hand over his children to the same system he fiercely defends.

As the Obamas prepare to leave Chicago for Washington, D.C., they have been traversing the streets of D.C. looking for a school for their daughters. Where are they looking? Private schools.

This should not be a surprise, as the Obama girls went to private school while the family has lived in Chicago. Mr. Obama defended sending the two girls to the University of Chicago Lab School, by saying it was a matter of convenience, not an indictment of public schools.

"My kids have gone to the University of Chicago Lab School, a private school, because I taught there, and it was five minutes from our house. So it was the best option for our kids," Mr. Obama said during a July 2007 debate.

"But the fact is that there are some terrific public schools in Chicago that they could be going to. The problem is, is that we don't have good schools, public schools, for all kids. A U.S. Senator can get his kid into a terrific public school."

There was no mention as to why Mr. Obama did not try and get his two children into one of those "good schools."

And while the odds are the Obamas will send the kids to private school - Mrs. Obama visited Georgetown Day School and Chelsea Clinton's alma mater Sidwell Friends School last week - D.C. school officials are holding out the hope Mr. Obama will put his money where his mouth has been.

"We've gladly discussed the many educational options at DCPS, encouraged them to explore all of the alternatives and in the end will fully support whatever decision the Obamas make," the D.C. schools said in a statement released after discussions were held between public school officials and the Obamas about the possibility of the two children attending public school. source>>>

Canada Revenue Agency to focus on so-called 'power sellers' on eBay

EBay Canada says it expects to start releasing personal information on its so-called "power sellers" to the Canada Revenue Agency this week.

"While eBay strenuously objects to these requests made by the CRA, we are obliged to comply with the legal ruling," the company said in a recent letter sent out to affected customers.

Last April, the Federal Court of Appeal upheld a lower court ruling ordering eBay Canada to provide the tax agency with the names and gross sales figures for power sellers - anyone who makes at least US$1,000 a month for three consecutive months through the website.

The legal struggle had been going on since 2006, when the tax agency launched an investigation to determine whether such sellers reported all their eBay revenue on their 2004 and 2005 income taxes.

It's estimated about 32,000 Canadians make all or part of their income selling on eBay.

Alberta, a Winnipeg man who didn't want his last name used, told a national news agency that he used to regularly sell old computer equipment, VCRs and CD players on the online auction house.

He said it was a hobby, although he admits he had big sales in 2004 and 2005.

"It's like having a garage sale - an electronic garage sale," he said.

But since receiving notification from eBay that he may be investigated for back taxes, he has stopped selling online.

"It's an easy picking for them. It's a low-hanging fruit on the tree," he complained.

"Everything that we've sold we've paid taxes on already. It's just another way of them grabbing a few extra dollars here and there. source>>>

Economic downturn putting a hurt on eBay

Trying to branch out of the auction marketplace, eBay recently received Federal Trade Commission approval to buy the U.S.-based online payments business Bill Me Later. It also is purchasing Danish online classifieds provider Den Bla Avis and Danish automobile classified site BilBasen.

Shares of eBay (EBAY) are down 63 percent this year, following a gain of 10 percent last year. It slashed upfront fees and increased the final commissions on its traditional auction marketplace, while charging a flat rate to list an item for sale under a new non-auction Buy It Now format that allows buyers to pay a fixed price.

Some eBay customers have been critical of the tinkering. It also faces competition from Google, Yahoo and Amazon.com, which offer services similar.

According to Thomson Financial, analyst recommendations on eBay consist of four "strong buys," five "buys," 12 "holds and three "underperforms."

Chief Executive John Donahoe, expecting a "very challenging" holiday season, has cut its fourth-quarter outlook. There has been a considerable slowdown in all its businesses since mid-August, and a stronger U.S. dollar is hurting its international business.

But eBay does have more than 85 million active users, PayPal more than 63 million active accounts and Skype more than 300 million registered accounts. It is in excellent financial shape, generates lots of cash and is active in repurchasing its shares.

Despite its downbeat fourth-quarter prediction, third-quarter revenue was up 12 percent, to $2.12 billion, and it had net income of $492.2 million, compared with a year-earlier net loss, when it took a large charge.

Earnings for eBay are expected to rise 12 percent this year versus a 2 percent decline predicted for the catalog and mail-order-houses industry. Next year's earnings are projected to decline 1 percent compared with an 8 percent increase expected for its peers. The expected five-year annualized growth rate of 14 percent is 1 percentage point higher than the industrywide forecast.

The Crimson Tide remained perfect on the season with a 32-7 romp over Mississippi State on Saturday. Javier Arenas finished with 153 yards on six punt returns, including an 80-yard touchdown. John Parker Wilson was less- than-stellar, throwing for 148 yards on 10-of-17 efficiency while adding a rushing touchdown for Alabama (11-0, 7-0 SEC), which closes out its regular season on November 29th at home against in-state rival Auburn in the Iron Bowl. Mark Ingram and Glen Coffee led the rushing attack with 78 and 71 yards on the ground, respectively, with Ingram posting a touchdown for the Tide, who will likely remain atop the BCS rankings. Alabama has a December 6th date with Florida in the SEC title game. The Crimson Tide are one of five SEC teams with an open date this coming weekend.

ARKANSAS: The Razorbacks were one of two SEC teams with an open date last weekend and will get back to action on Saturday against Mississippi State. Arkansas was simply outplayed by South Carolina in the team's most recent outing two weeks ago, losing to the Gamecocks by a 34-21 final. In that setback, Arkansas (4-6, 1-5) was led by quarterback Casey Dick, who completed 16-of-26 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns. However, Dick also threw three interceptions and was sacked six times. Jarius Wright led the receiving corps with two catches for 82 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown. The South Carolina defense held Arkansas in check, limiting the Razorbacks to just 255 yards of total offense, including a miserable 54 yards on the ground.

AUBURN: A tough season got even more disappointing on Saturday for Auburn, as it dropped a 17-13 decision to Georgia in front of a heart-broken home crowd. Mario Fannin ran for a score and caught a touchdown pass from Kodi Burns, who threw for 179 yards on 16-of-30 passing in defeat. Auburn (5-6, 2-5), coming off last week's victory over Tennessee-Martin of the FCS, has lost five of its last six and needs a victory on November 29th at No. 1 Alabama in the Iron Bowl to qualify for a bowl game. The Tigers last failed to reach a bowl game in 1999, Tommy Tuberville's first season as head coach. Auburn will be idle this coming weekend.

FLORIDA: The Gators continue to look unstoppable, as they crushed South Carolina on Saturday by a 56-6 final. Percy Harvin rushed for a career-high 167 yards and two touchdowns on a mere eight carries to lead the way in the win. Tim Tebow rushed for a touchdown and threw two more while compiling 173 passing yards on 13-of-20 for Florida (9-1, 7-1 SEC), which closed out its conference schedule with six consecutive lopsided victories. Since a home loss to Ole Miss on September 27th, the Gators have outscored their opponents, 299-63. Jeffery Demps and Chris Rainey each scored while adding 43 and 55 yards on the ground, respectively, and Deonte Thompson caught three balls for 66 yards and a score for the Gators, who outgained the Gamecocks, 519-173. The Gators will take on The Citadel in non-conference action this Saturday.

GEORGIA: In a true nail-biter, the Bulldogs squeaked out a 17-13 victory over Auburn on Saturday. Matthew Stafford threw a pair of touchdown passes and Knowshon Moreno ran for 131 yards to lead the way. Stafford completed 15-of-24 passes for 215 yards for the Bulldogs (9-2, 6-2 SEC), who have won two straight. Their only two losses have come against Alabama and Florida, two of the top three teams in the nation. Moreno, who carried 22 times, finished with four catches for 58 yards to account for 189 scrimmage yards. Georgia got a tremendous defensive stop late in regulation to seal the victory. The Bulldogs will be idle this weekend and will return to action against rival Georgia Tech on November 29th.

revisiting impact of money in politics

Posted on November 17, 2008 | 5 Views

For people who like to gamble, a system that promises to deliver winners nine out of 10 times would be worth its weight in gold.

That would hold true whether you were playing the ponies or putting a few dollars down on your favorite professional football team on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Well, it should come as no surprise to anyone today that such a "system" exists in American politics - and not just because President-elect Barack Obama obliterated all previous campaign finance records by outraising and outspending Republican opponent John McCain by nearly a 2-to-1 margin on his way to the White House.

The system is simply this: Make a list of every congressional race for the House of Representatives and Senate and bet on the candidate who spent the most money.

If you had done that during the 2008 campaign, you would have been correct better than 90 percent of the time, according to figures compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics (www.opensecrets.org), a nonpartisan organization based in Washington, D.C., that tracks money in U.S. politics.

Based on an examination of all congressional races decided by midday Nov. 5, the candidates who spent the most money won 93 percent of the contests for the House and 94 percent of the races for the Senate.

In raw numbers, that means the big spenders triumphed 397 of 426 times in the House and 30 of 32 times in the Senate based on candidate spending through Oct. 15.

And in case you're thinking that may be an aberration this year, think again. In 2006, candidates who spent the most money won 94 percent of the time in the House and 73 percent of the time in the Senate; two years earlier, the figures were 98 percent and 88 percent, respectively.

"The 2008 election will go down in U.S. history as an election of firsts, but this was far from the first time that money was overwhelmingly victorious on Election Day," says Sheila Krumholz, executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics. "The best-funded candidates won nine out of 10 contests, and all but a few members of Congress will be returning to Washington."

In fact, incumbent top spenders did even better than the universe of candidates as a whole. Top-spending incumbents prevailed 95 percent of the time in the House and 93 percent of the time in the Senate.

Talk about the advantages of incumbency.

Sex party set to heat up Australian politics

Posted on November 17, 2008 | 3 Views

Australia is about to get a new entry into national politics -- a party devoted to sex.

The brains behind the Australian Sex Party, which will be launched in Melbourne on Thursday, believe that politics has become too stuffy and conservative Down Under.

Describing itself as "serious about sex" the party sees itself as a political response to the sexual needs of Australians in the face of moral campaigners and prudish politicians.

Party convenor Fiona Patten, who is head of the national adult retail and entertainment lobby group the Eros Association, said the trigger had been the government's decision to place a mandatory filter on the Internet.

Under the plan, designed to shield children from online porn and violence, Internet service providers will have to filter out pornography and other material deemed inappropriate in their feeds to houses and schools.

Users wanting access to uncensored material would have to opt out of the service, the government said when it announced the plan in January.

Patten was scathing of the move, which she said would damage the porn industry, arguing that material that was deemed acceptable 20 years ago would now be banned.

"This filter actually blacklists any adult site so it means that material which is absolutely legal for an adult to buy in a newsagency in Australia, they will be prohibited from viewing it online," Patten told AFP on Monday.

To counter what she termed the conservative, Christian politicians behind such legislation in Australia, Patten said the industry had determined: "If we can't beat them, join them."

"We want to be in there putting the position which I think is probably (that held by) the majority of Australians, that, yes, by all means protect children, but do not in that way reduce the Internet to a G-rated Internet," she said.

G-rated films in Australia are approved for all audiences.

Commenting on a recent case where a company was forced to remove billboard ads for a medication promising "longer lasting sex" because of a large number of complaints, she said an "absolute fear of the word sex" had developed.

"And it's just crazy," Patten said. "Sex is as natural to us as food. It's a necessary part of our lives."

And politics, she might add. source>>>
