Leinart fights to keep backup job with Cardinals -- Matt Leinart, who last year in training camp lost a battle with Kurt Warner to be the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, is in a fight with Brian St. Pierre to remain the No. 2 this season.

"I think they're just pushing me, as they've been doing for a long time now," Leinart said. "I've been through a lot the last couple of years and seen a lot of different situations and stuff, so what's another one for the books?"

Toomer signs with Chiefs -- The Kansas City Chiefs signed veteran Amani Toomer to a one-year contract, adding experience to a young receiving corps. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Toomer spent his first 13 seasons with the New York Giants, catching 668 passes for 9,497 yards and 54 touchdowns. He had 48 catches for 580 yards and four TDs last season.

Packers GM won't rule out interest in Vick -- Asked whether Green Bay might be interested in scandal-tainted quarterback Michael Vick, general manager Ted Thompson didn't rule it out.

But that doesn't necessarily mean the Packers are in hot pursuit of Vick. "What is the answer that we give to questions like this? We're always looking to improve our team," Thompson said. "We look at all options at all times. I wouldn't care to speculate in terms of the odds or the percentages (of signing Vick) or anything like that."

Cromartie fined for tweet -- The San Diego Chargers fined cornerback Antonio Cromartie $2,500 for using Twitter to complain about the food at training camp. The offending tweet apparently equated the food quality with the Chargers' failure to reach the Super Bowl in recent seasons. source>>>

Former Lions receiver Charles Rogers revealed to ESPN that he smoked marijuana every day when he played in the NFL.

"I blew everyday," Rogers told ESPN (see the video below). "But you know I was doing something wrong ... I was wrong."

Rogers, the second overall pick in 2003 by Detroit who played just three seasons in the league, also said that he was abusing prescription drugs when he was in the NFL.

Former Lions president Matt Millen, now an ESPN analyst, told the network he saw noticeable degradation in Rogers' skills by the time the receiver began his third season.

"He was average," Millen said. "Something clearly was wrong. He looked like a different guy."

Rogers received a 30-day jail sentence earlier this year for failing a court-ordered drug test. Now 28, he said he would like to explore an NFL comeback.

MLive.com sampled NFL teams about potential interest in Rogers in June and found no one who would be willing to give him a shot. source>>>

'We're going to win the Super Bowl this year' claims Jets' D'Brickashaw Ferguson

Joe Namath last donned the New York Jets' green and white in 1976.

But now it appears that the Hall of Fame quarterback who famously guaranteed the Jets' stunning Super Bowl III victory over the Baltimore Colts in 1969 has found a successor willing to step into his long unfilled shoes.

And that man is ... fourth-year T D'Brickashaw Ferguson?

"My previous coach, we had a different approach," Ferguson said today, referring to the Jets' former coach, buttoned-up Eric Mangini. "We operated differently. I feel now, with the coach we have, it's important to state what you're going to do and state the goals you're going to attain. I'm adopting that philosophy. When I say I'm going to the Pro Bowl this year, I honestly mean it. When I say we're going to win the Super Bowl this year, I honestly mean that, too. It's up to us, now that we put it out there, we're going to have to do the things that will cause us to be successful. I think we have the formula right."

A rather stunning proclamation from the Brick, notes Daily News Jets beat writer Rich Cimini. Ferguson, who's been solid at left tackle since being taken with the No. 4 pick of the 2006 draft but never a Pro Bowler, has been rather soft-spoken to this point of his career.

Just shows that the infectious enthusiasm and bravado of rookie coach Rex Ryan continues to pervade the roster on both sides of the ball.

As for the team's quarterback battle between first-round rookie Mark Sanchez and veteran Kellen Clemens, Cimini says "pocket presence continues to be an issue for Clemens, who doesn't sense the rush and slide in the pocket as well as he should."

Clemens could be feeling the heat on and off the field. Ryan hinted Wednesday morning that he'd like to name a starter by the third week of the preseason.

"Obviously, you want to make that decision as fast as you can," Ryan said. "Because now that guy gets all the work with the first group. But we're not there yet. I'm not ready to do that. ... Ideally, you like to have a pretty good idea going into that third preseason game who the guy is."

And Ryan did have praise for Clemens.

"Clemens has a better grasp of the system than Sanchez does," he said. "They both have their moments. And then they've had their moments when it's like, 'What are you doing?' So I think the competition is good. It seems one guy will be one day and vice versa. The cream will rise to the top and we'll be able to figure it out."

Cimini notes that Clemens got 15 of the 16 first-team repetitions this morning in 11-on-11 drills, but Ryan promises an even look for Sanchez.

"We obviously have to get him reps with the (first team) to make this a competition," Ryan said. "You got to do that. We never drafted him not to be a guy who's going to compete for the starting job."

Football Outside of the Big Ten - The Pac-10

From time to time, it's important to look outside the Big Ten and remind ourselves that there is football being played by other teams in other conferences. The Rivalry, Esq. continues its look at those other conferences with the most dominated league in the country - The Pac-10.

No, the Pac-10 hasn't been dominated by any other league. The Pac-10 have been dominated by the USC Trojans. The Men of Troy's streak of 7 consecutive league titles (and yes, three were shared) equals the combined consecutive league titles won by the champions of the Big East (Cincinnati - 1), ACC (Virginia Tech - 2), SEC (Florida - 1), and Big XII (Oklahoma -3). That's impressive for USC. That's not impressive for the rest of the league.

Does anything stand in their way?

USC will be Top Five good again this year. The questions remain: Will be a season like 2004, where they will avoid an in-league stumble that has kept them from the title games; or Could this be the first time since 2002 that a challenger steps up and wins the conference's Rose Bowl bid? source>>>

A potential shocker? Kansas over Oklahoma.

Now, I'm not saying this will definitely happen, which is why it's a potential shocker for now. However, the Sooners will travel to Lawrence the week following their showdown with Texas in Dallas. If OU rolls over Texas, forget it. If they beat Texas in a total dogfight, it might be a close one, but I'd still take the Sooners. However, if Texas beats Oklahoma, and the Sooners have to travel the following week to face a Kansas team that will most likely be undefeated and ready to make a serious statement, this has the makings of a Mark Mangino-sized upset. There will be a coaching search at Notre Dame.

Let's face it, when you're not in the Pac-10 and you've got Washington and Washington State on the schedule ... okay, so maybe the Irish got a little lucky there. However, the fan base in South Bend, eager to see a revival of Notre Dame football, will be calling for the ouster of Charlie Weis when Notre Dame doesn't win 10 games this season. The search will no doubt be a long one; who will want to take on that much pressure right away? Florida will beat Tennessee. It will not be pretty.

Most people expect Florida to beat Tennessee, but this season's matchup at the Swamp has all the makings of what could be a blowout to remember. Urban Meyer doesn't like being trash talked, and despite SEC commissioner Mike Slive's attempts to get everyone to play nice, Meyer will not call off the dogs for this one. Lane Kiffin needs a couple of years to rebuild Tennessee, so maybe he should've waited a bit before calling Meyer out. It will be a relentless attack, aimed at teaching Kiffin a lesson, and I expect Tebow to have career high numbers when it's said and done. The best game of Week 1 will be Georgia/Oklahoma State, and it might end up being one of the best games of the season.

Georgia's stingy defense against Oklahoma State's high-octane offense is going to make for one fantastic matchup, and will no doubt be a must see game for college fanatics. Stillwater will be rocking at the chance to knock off a SEC team early, and no doubt, Joe Cox will take his lumps early this season. Georgia's first five games are brutal, while their later half of the schedule looks much easier, despite that annual trip to Jacksonville to meet the Gators. How Cox handles himself in this game might be an indicator for how the Bulldogs end up this season. source>>>

Odds to win the BCS championship game: A look into the College Football Futures and what teams are picked to have a chance by odds-makers come January.

A look at last year's championship teams, LSU who won the title game last season, and Ohio State who came up short after a valient effort in 2008.

LSU isn't even on the radar to get back to the big one, as +3000 odds show a far cry from championship odds. Ohio State shows a +1000 which is better but still nowhere near some other teams ranked a bit higher in their chances to win. TheOnlinewire.com recommends our readers to get a generous 20% sign up bonus and bet these College Football odds at Bookmaker.com. Click here to Bet now.

Florida leads the pack with odds standing at +220 to win the BCS title game. Florida looks for more big numbers by Tim Tebow, and keeping the strong defense in tact this season. Florida should have a shot at the title game, but at these odds it is a likely stay away.

USC has some lame odds at +650. Runner up based on odds and without the same team as last season. Yes they have the coaching edge, and the team itself has been solid for years but there will be a lot of pressure in the QB slot this year as Mark Sanchez starts his NFL campaign. There are better odds on teams that will be more competitive this season. TheOnlinewire.com recommends our readers to get a generous 20% sign up bonus and bet these College Football odds at Bookmaker.com. Click here to Bet now.

Oklahoma can get it done and odds makers show a +725 for them to win the BCS National Championship. Sam Bradford will be back this year and will try to follow up his 4719 passing yard season with a similar performance. Brown was their leading rusher last season with 1220 yards on the ground. If they have an improvement defensively, this team will be tough to beat especially with this style offense and production.

Texas is the last look on the list. Odds makers show a +750 to win it all. Colt McCoy comes off an impressive season with 3859 passing yards last season. This team can shoot it out offensively as well, and can play some defense too. Texas finished 12-1 last year in the regular season and hope to turn out another solid year like last. Rockabilly Pioneer Billy Lee Riley Dead at 75

Rockabilly pioneer Billy Lee Riley, a key figure at Sun Records in Memphis, Tenn., died Sunday (Aug. 2) in Jonesboro, Ark., at age 75 following a lengthy illness. He's best known for his 1957 single, "Flying Saucers Rock and Roll," and its follow-up "Red Hot."

Although Riley never attained the mainstream success achieved by several of his contemporaries at Sam Phillips' legendary record label, he was a major at Sun alongside Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and others.

Born Oct. 5, 1933, to a family of sharecroppers in Pocahontas, Ark., Riley was exposed to blues music at an early age through the guitar playing of black musicians who also worked on the farms. After serving the U.S. Army, he recorded "Trouble Bound," a single released on Sun in 1956. After scoring a hit with "Flying Saucers Rock and Roll," he recorded "Red Hot" with a band that included Lewis on piano. The song was written by Billy Emerson, a member of Ike Turner's band that also recorded at Sun.

However, just as "Red Hot" began to gain momentum at radio and retail, Phillips shifted his promotional efforts to Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire." Despite the setback, Riley's version of "Red Hot" is widely regarded as one of the prime recordings of the rockabilly era.

Because of the success of "Flying Saucers Rock and Roll," Riley named his band the Little Green Men. Riley found that his versatility on guitar, bass, harmonica and drums was a major asset. His musical group, which included guitarist Roland Janes and drummer J.M. Van Eaton, worked extensively as the Sun Studio house band.

Riley moved to Los Angeles in the early '60s and played on sessions for the Beach Boys, Herb Alpert, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and many others. He returned to Arkansas in the early '70s and began a construction business. In 1977, Robert Gordon teamed with Link Wray & His Ray Men to score a moderate hit nationally with their version of "Red Hot." The attention prompted Riley to return to the concert stage and recording studio.

He continued to record in the '90s, releasing a series of albums including Blue Collar Blues for Hightone Records and the Grammy-nominated Hot Damn! for Capricorn Records. His most recent album, Hillbilly Rockin' Man, was released in 2003.

Riley had dealt with a series of health problems, including heart surgery and hip replacement surgery. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in May and made his final performance in June at the Rock and Soul Museum in Memphis. He died at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.

Funeral plans remained incomplete Monday morning (Aug. 3), but a memorial concert is scheduled for Aug. 30 in Newport, Ark. source>>>

Billy Currington and Band Back in Nashville Following Tragedy at Canadian Festival

Posted on August 5, 2009 | 92 Views

Billy Currington was resting Monday (Aug. 3) at his Nashville home after sustaining a minor concussion when the main stage collapsed during a country music festival in the Canadian province of Alberta. One of his fans, 35-year-old Donna Moore, was killed when a speaker fell on top of her.

Authorities said as many as 75 people were injured late Saturday (Aug. 1) afternoon when heavy winds and rain hit the Big Valley Jamboree, an outdoor festival in Camrose, Alberta. Currington was on the last song of his set and singer-actor Kevin Costner and his band, Modern West, were getting ready to appear when the stage collapsed.

Currington was treated and released at an area hospital. His bassist, Alex Stevens, was pinned beneath the stage wreckage for approximately 30 minutes while rescue personnel removed debris to free him. Stevens underwent immediate surgery to repair a severed artery and nerves in his left arm and is currently receiving treatment in Nashville.

Costner was not injured, although his road manager and a band member sustained minor injuries and were treated and released from an area hospital.

Moore was sitting on a section of bleachers connected to the stage when the force of the wind collapsed the stage and scaffolding. The mother of two, she was a resident of Lloydminster, a city located on the border of the Alberta and Saskatchewan provinces, and worked as a marketing assistant at the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce, the Edmonton Sun reported. Moore's friend, Tracy Timmerman, told the newspaper, "That was the highlight of our weekend -- that we were going to get to meet Billy [Currington] and sit on the stage."

In a statement released by his record label, Currington said, "My heart goes out to the family of Donna Moore, who was killed, and all of the other fans who were hurt on Saturday." In a message sent to fans via Twitter, he said, "The boys and I are very grateful to be home and for life itself. We thank you for your prayers and concern and will see you on the road again soon."

Currington's next concert is scheduled for Thursday (Aug. 6) in Sikeston, Mo.

On Costner's Web site, he and his band members posted a statement indicating "it is difficult to know what to say" in the aftermath of the tragedy. "We would like to extend our warmest sympathy to the family and friends of Donna Moore, who was killed, as well as the family and friends of all those who were injured. Our prayers go out to you, and we wish with all our hearts that your loved ones' stories from the festival were filled only with fond memories of music and celebration."

The statement continued, "We would like to thank all of the Camrose and Edmonton rescue workers, who responded so valiantly and quickly in the midst of the chaos, as well as the superb staff and volunteers of St. Mary's Hospital in Camrose. Your efforts were amazing, and we owe you a debt of gratitude for our health and safety. ... We are all aware of how lucky we are to be alive, and we are so thankful to be back with our families today. However, our thoughts will continue to be with the city of Camrose and the fans at the Big Valley Jamboree, and we sincerely hope for another opportunity to share music with you."

Approximately 15,000 people attended this year's festival, and approximately 100 were on or near the stage when it collapsed. The four-day event began Thursday (July 30) and had included performances by Josh Turner, Glen Campbell, Joe Diffie and others. Saturday's headliner, Gary Allan, was to perform immediately following Costner's set. All of Sunday's events were immediately canceled, including an appearance by Tim McGraw. source>>>
