Amazon, eBay war

The New York Times chronicles the state of competition between e-commerce giants Amazon and eBay, as both firms become increasingly more like each other.

E-commerce, "was once thought to be a refuge from economic storms. People who stay away from the mall might actually be more tempted to shop online and hunt for deals, or so the thinking went," reporter Brad Stone writes. "But analysts are now revisiting that assumption."

The article suggests that Amazon is gaining market share on eBay because the Seattle firm was patient and willing to adopt new ideas, such as selling mp3s, while eBay was more stagnant in its decision making.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told the Times, "We are willing to plant seeds that take five to seven years to grow into reasonable things. You can't do big, clean-sheet invention unless you are willing to invest for long periods of time."

Amazon is like Apple, eBay is like Microsoft -- Or at least that's the tech-industry analogy that comes to mind when reading this piece about the increasingly competitive battle between the two e-commerce giants.

"Black" silicon is a better light receiver -- A silicon variation discovered in Harvard University's labs and licensed out to a company called SiOnyx, is far more receptive to light than ordinary silicon. The substance (pictured) may be useful for X-ray machines, transistors, night-vision goggles and a number of other devices. Solar cells are also a potential use, although it will be quite a few years before we see commercialization. Lots at Xconomy.

U.S. Investing $250 Billion in Banks

The Treasury Department, in its boldest move yet, is expected to announce a plan on Tuesday to invest up to $250 billion in banks, according to officials. The United States is also expected to guarantee new debt issued by banks for three years -- a measure meant to encourage the banks to resume lending to one another and to customers, officials said.

And the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation will offer an unlimited guarantee on bank deposits in accounts that do not bear interest -- typically those of businesses -- bringing the United States in line with several European countries, which have adopted such blanket guarantees.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 936 points, or 11 percent, the largest single-day gain in the American stock market since the 1930s. The surge stretched around the globe: in Paris and Frankfurt, stocks had their biggest one-day gains ever, responding to news of similar multibillion-dollar rescue packages by the French and German governments.

Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. outlined the plan to nine of the nation's leading bankers at an afternoon meeting, officials said. He essentially told the participants that they would have to accept government investment for the good of the American financial system.

Work From Home With Your Own Ebay Business

If you are looking to start your own home business you are not
alone. Thousands of people scour the internet daily for new work
at home ideas. One of these work at home ideas is to start your
own EBay business. You might be wondering how you can start your
own EBay business, lets explore this work at home business idea
a little further.

What is EBay?

EBay is the most popular online auction business. They have
millions of products just waiting for a new home. People will
buy almost anything on EBay. They have categories for almost any
product imaginable. EBay lets you list your items you have for
sale and allows you to include pictures of the items. You get to
choose how long the auction runs. They also offer several
different ways to make your auction stand out and get noticed.

So now that you know what EBay is, you may still be wondering
how you can make a successful home business from it. This is
easy. Take a look around your house. Do you see lots of things
laying around that you do not use or do not need? If you can
answer yes you can have a work from home business with EBay. A
good bit of the people selling on EBay are selling items they no
longer need or want at home. Instead of having that yearly
summer yard sale, take some pictures of the items and list them
on EBay. You will be surprised at what sells on EBay. Do you
have kids that have out grown their clothes? Are your shelves
cluttered with Knick knacks? These might not seem like something
that would be a good seller, but they are.

Do you make any type of craft or jewelry? These are the perfect
items to sell with your EBay business. Do you like to read? Do
you have tons of books that you have already read? These books
can be sold on EBay instead of taking up space on your
bookshelves.

There are all types of different items right in your own home
that would sell on EBay.

Running your own EBay business from home does not have to be a
hard job. Spend a weekend going through items you have stored
away in the attic or basement. If you have not used the things
in ages why not consider selling them through your new EBay
business.

You can ask your friends and family to give you any items they
have just sitting around collecting dust. Offer to help them
clean out their garages. Get your kids to part with the toys
they have not played with in the last ten years. Some of these
toys may be collector's items.

Running an EBay business allows you to work when you want to.
There are no set hours, no boss yelling at you, and no annoying
co workers. You can sell as little or as much as you want to.
Give it a shot. Try selling a few items and see how simple it
is. Before you know it you will have a successful work at home
EBay business. Just think how nice it will be to unclutter your
house and make some money at the same time. Source>>>

Facing tough economy, some turn to eBay

Facing tough economy, some turn to eBay

NEWTOWN -- With the economy in poor shape, residents of one of the wealthiest cities in Connecticut are searching for ways to increase the depth of their wallets.

Some are turning to eBay to help regain the money they've paid at the gas pump.

Kerri Cartelli, a stay-at-home mother of four from Newtown, started selling on eBay in 2003, after she had her third child.

Armed with a new digital camera her husband gave her, she began listing and selling children's clothing online.

Cartelli, who was a public school teacher in the Bronx before becoming a mother, decided to take an eBay certification course to put her teaching skills back in use.

"The greatest thing about eBay for me as a mom was that I didn't have to do it that day," Cartelli told the more than 50-person crowd that showed up for the first of two eBay selling seminars she gave last month at C.H. Booth Library.

One of the most attractive qualities of eBay is that sellers and buyers can post and purchase items 24 hours a day, which allows people to work around their hectic schedules and as frequently or infrequently they choose.

In fact, 1.3 million sellers worldwide use eBay as a primary or secondary source of income, Cartelli said.

The flexibility and convenience of eBay, as well as the ability to make a high profit, are some of the major reasons Cartelli continues to sell on eBay.

She said she posts her items and corresponds with buyers on her laptop
Advertisement
while her children are in bed. She does all her eBay work at night, except taking pictures of items she wants to sell, which she does during the day because her children enjoy watching her do it.

She said the first words from her older children when they get home from school are often about whether she sold anything online that day.

Besides teaching the basics of how to set up a seller account, receive and make payments, list items and ship them, Cartelli used the two-hour seminar to dispel myths and fears people have about selling online.

"If you put it for $1 and someone bids on it, you have to sell it," unless you list a reserve price," Cartelli said. "You need to know what you are willing to let it go for."

People of all ages attended the free seminars sponsored by the library. Three sisters who are home-schooled asked about selling historical dresses and homemade jewelry.

Elderly couples came to learn how to make some money during their retirement years. Working and single mothers showed up to find out how to earn extra money during their free time.

She assured people they will not have their identities stolen. Everyone is asked the same questions when they register, including their checking account information if they sign up for PayPal.

PayPal is a service that allows people to have money taken out of or deposited in their checking accounts, to avoid the hassle of sending money orders or personal checks.

"Don't panic when you put in your checking account (number). There's no one watching ... It's 2008," she said. "It's fun. Enjoy it -- don't panic."

"We go to church and drink the wine. I don't know where that cup's been!" she told the crowd, causing laughter to erupt throughout the room.

One important thing Cartelli emphasized is that eBay and PayPal will never send e-mails. All correspondence is done within the Web site, except PayPal notifying that money has been deposited in a checking account.

So never click on a link and enter personal information, she warned. Always go to eBay.com and sign in to check messages.

Another facet of eBay is the "Buy it now" feature, which allows people to purchase an item for a set cost instead of entering a bidding war with other online shoppers.

"Now people can actually go to sleep, knowing they win," Cartelli said.

To list an item as a "Buy it now," sellers need to have previously bought or sold 10 items, she said.

"Once you do it a few times, you will be like 'Why didn't I do this before?"

Microsoft Announces Visual Studio 2010

Microsoft announces Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0, and says the overall development strategy revolves around five pillars. The first pillar involves the Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) 2010, formerly codenamed "Rosario."

Microsoft has announced the name of the next version of its developer tools and platform: Visual Studio 2010 and the .NET Framework 4.0.

In the announcement on Sept. 29, Microsoft also described the next release through the following five focus areas: riding the next-generation platform wave, inspiring developer delight, powering breakthrough departmental applications, enabling emerging trends such as cloud computing, and democratizing ALM (application life-cycle management), said Dave Mendlen, a director of product management in Microsoft's Developer Division.

However, Mendlen did not give an actual date for when the new technology would become available, except to say that its name implies something about the time frame of its availability. However, like automobile makers, Microsoft has been known to release products well before the year in the product names.

Meanwhile, Cameron Skinner, product unit manager for Visual Studio Team System, gave an in-depth look at how Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) 2010, which had been code-named "Rosario," will help developers better handle ALM processes. However, neither Mendlen nor Skinner would detail what developers can expect to get in their hands in terms of Visual Studio Team System 2010 in the near future. With the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference less than a month away, developers are looking for bits they can come away with to begin to kick the tires on. However, Microsoft has not indicated whether there will be another CTP (Community Technology Preview) or even a beta of the Rosario technology.

"With Visual Studio 2010 and the .NET Framework 4.0, we are focused on the core pillars of developer experience, support for the latest platforms spanning client, server, services and devices, targeted experiences for specific application types, and core architecture improvements," said S. "Soma" Somasegar, senior vice president of the Developer Division at Microsoft, in a statement. "These pillars are designed specifically to meet the needs of developers, the teams that drive the application life cycle from idea to delivery, and the customers that demand the highest quality applications across multiple platforms. You can expect to hear a lot more about Visual Studio 2010 and the .NET Framework 4.0 in the coming months."

Meanwhile, Mendlen said VSTS 2010 features includes new capabilities that make it easier for all contributors on the software team to participate throughout the life cycle -- from the core developers and testers to the wider team of project managers, designers and business analysts.

The new offering will feature modeling tools through VSTA 2010 Architecture, where Microsoft will enable both technical and non-technical users to create and use models to collaborate and to define business and system functionality graphically. The new version supports both Unified Modeling Language and Domain Specific Language support, so development organizations will have the right tool for the right job. The new modeling capabilities in VSTS 2010 are a core part of the larger Microsoft modeling platform, which will also include the "Oslo" repository, tools and language.

Mendlen said "Oslo," though developed by the Microsoft Connected Systems Division, will be delivered via Visual Studio. And Skinner added that Microsoft added UML support based on customer demand. He said Microsoft already has support for five types of UML diagrams.

Also, with VSTS 2010, Microsoft has made a significant investment in testing features and simplified tools required to integrate testing across the life cycle, Mendlen said. New features include the ability to eliminate non-reproducible bugs by providing a TiVo-like recording capability for reproducing bugs.

And Microsoft also has made major investments in the capabilities and scalability of TFS (Team Foundation Server) including improvements that allow teams to configure and adopt any flavor of agile development processes, Skinner said. And in the source code management system, TFS now provides Microsoft WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) based visualization tools for tracking changes across branches and into the production build. VSTS 2010 also introduces workflow-based builds that catch errors early.

"The application life cycle is an integral part of today's business," said Theresa Lanowitz, founder of Voke, in a statement. "Regardless of core competencies, all organizations are driven by software that is created and customized to deliver a competitive advantage. Enterprises that invest in an ALM solution can decrease their total cost of ownership of applications in their IT portfolio and bring about a global approach that is an integrated and expansive system consisting of people, processes and technology. This global approach to ALM facilitates collaboration and takes the risk out of software development to produce predictable and reliable results for an optimized business outcome. Solutions such as VSTS are poised to take advantage of market opportunity by offering an application life-cycle platform to help enterprises realize this ROI benefit."

Moreover, in another move to increase integration across the life cycle, Microsoft also announced that VSTS 2010 will provide a unified VSTS Development and Database product.

And as a benefit to existing SA (Software Assurance) customers, those who currently own Visual Studio Team System 2008 Development Edition or Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition will receive all the following products starting Oct. 1 for free: Visual Studio Team System 2008 Development Edition; Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition; Visual Studio 2005 Team System for Software Developers; and Visual Studio 2005 Team System for Database Professionals.
